A friend of mine used to sprinkle cut cat fur or furballs around. Worked pretty good. Or, get a long tailed and earred cat. They do a good job.
What works great for me is ex-lax. Becareful if you have pets or small children. When I see evidence of mice or rats I put down a few squares of ex-lax. The next morning the ex-lax is gone and so are the mice or rats. You can also cover the ex-lax with peanut butter.

Mother balls are the best mouse deterrent and repellant, pluse they are convenient to use and are easy to find, inexpensive..
Moth balls are toxic to humans, though. If you can smell their odor, it is at a toxic level.
There are little packets of spruce and mint you can buy from freshcab. That keeps them away, Me too, I hate the same smells that keep mice away.
I currently work at Tractor Supply and we did not stop carrying FreshCab, there is currently a bit of a delay on the procurement of this product into our warehouses. The problem is hoped to be resolved very shortly. :)
