Getting Rid of Tiny Black Bugs?

Getting Rid of Tiny Black Bugs - long narrow black bugI've noticed these tiny black bugs in our bathrooms and a few in the kitchen over the past few weeks. They were even in folded towels in the linen cupboard. We've lived in our house almost 20 years and have never seen them before. What are they? How can we get rid of them?

There are much safer ways to get rid of gnats than spraying them with a bug spray. I would rather go the homemade way than buy the sprays and get sick.

In a jar mix some apple cider vinegar with a few drops of liquid dish soap. Put the jar in the areas that you are seeing the gnats and fruit flies in your home. Once they go in the jar and they will because the smell attracts them they can't get out again because the dish soap holds them in the liquid and they drown.

These are cheap and easy to make and you should make several of them for your home.

I believe this is a rice weevil. They are harmless to humans (other than eating the grains in your pantry!) Check your flour, rice, cornbread, etc. containers. Another thought: do you have one of those rice-filled shoulder/neck heating packs stored in your bath or bedroom? Good luck!

Did you ever really find out what this is and how to get rid of them? I kill a dozen a day on my bathroom. Poured 2 bottle of drain fly liquid down the drains and nada! They keep coming.

Rice Weevils can fly.
Granary Weevils cant fly.

The treatment for all these pantry pests is the same (Vacuum/wash/spray pesticide everywhere theyve been. Keep all rice & grain products in sealed airtight containers. Wipe up all food crumbs immediately so they starve).

Rice Weevils are much worse to deal with because they can infest all of your house more quickly, due to their ability to fly.

It looks like some kind of ant or gnat. Get rid of any moisture or leaks. Spray with a general purpose insecticide

Are they flying or walking or both?

If they are just walking, it is best to vacuum them up, do a good cleaning of the area and then if they come back figure out what you have and where they are coming from.

This time of year is ripe for creepy crawly to come inside to get warm (if you are in a colder climate like I am) and usually it is a one and done visit--meaning we vaccuum, clean, toss everything outside away from the house and they don't come back).

If you are still seeing them after the initial clean up, then you may want to take one to the hardware store and get them to ID it and then figure out what its habitat is.
