Getting a New Puppy After Losing One to Parvo?

I lost a puppy earlier this year due to parvovirus from the previous owner. I've bleached everything in the house and put a anti-parvo solution everywhere as well. I am planning to get a new Maltipoo puppy, however I heard that it's best to get an older dog. Would a 12 week old Maltipoo puppy still be too young and possibly catch the virus again?

First you have my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your pup earlier this year. So sad.

That is good that you bleached everything and put out the anti parvo solution. Has it been 6 months? Most vets say it takes 6 months for the virus to dissipate.

With the new pup, since most pups should get the first vaccines (at least where I am) at 6-8 weeks and then get the rest in 3 week intervals, 12 weeks may be OK, but I would check with the vet to make sure the pup has the vaccine titer in its blood so they have protection.

The vet can give you the low down on this better than any lay person.

Thank you very much for your condolences and quick reply. It will be 5 months since my puppy passed away. I will definitely check with the vet and ask them, thank you very much again.

Hello! I hope this message finds you well, I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart, because of your reply, my puppy is now almost 11 months old. We cleaned every inch of the house and waited for about 6 months for the virus to dissipate before we had him enter our house. We also kept him secluded from any previous places in the house that might have been exposed to parvo and continued cleaning the house until he had all of his vaccines completed.

He is now a perfectly healthy and strong puppy, and every bit of cleaning and patience was so worth it. I thank you so much again.

Parvo can last 6 months inside and a year outside. I would wait that amount of time before getting another dog.

Just make sure your puppy has completed all his parvo vaccinations.
