If you know the answer to the above things, that pretty much makes up your mind for you
traditional gifts for boys that age are paraphernalia for their favourite sports team, build-your-own Nike shoes, tickets to a music concert or sports event they like, music paraphernalia if they're into music (guitar strings and picks, drumsticks, etc), remote control drones, phone accessories, magazine subscriptions, outdoor supplies/kits (IE 1st aid kit or camping supplies if they're into that) and if all else fails, a gift certificate to a store you know they like (even if its just Starbucks)

Get tickets for a weekend sports game and go together
It depends on your budget. When I was around that age, we all usually hung out together with friends and went to the bowling alley, played pool & I'd make him a card (handmade). Small gift like a wallet.
Everyone these days has a cell phone or a smartphone. You can get him a personalized case for his phone.
A T-shirt for his sports team is another great idea.
You can also just make him a romantic dinner and ask your mom to help you serve the food. Set it up like a restaurant and make a fancy table for 2.
Although he will not be able to drive yet, a key chain would be a really good idea, you could have his name engraved on it with the date.
