I am in charge of centerpieces for a girl scout luncheon. The theme is "Girl Scouts can weather anything" due to all our trouble with hurricanes this year. We have a very small budget. Please help.

Floating candles make nice centre pieces even in the middle of the day. Get some little plastic bowls and fill them with water. Then put in glitter or pretty little river stones or little 'gems' from a craft shop. Then place your floating candles, preferably the same colour as the bowls, in the water. Don't light them until just before your guests arrive. You can sprinkle the glitter, etc. around the bowls on the table too. We did this for my prom and it only cost $6 a table.

At a hotel dinner for our church group they simply put out mirror tiles with a simple glass votive holder and tealight candle. I think you could print up some colorful "continents" and place or glue them on the tiles. Or around each candle, put some cultural things like origami paper cranes for Japan, Day of the Dead figures for Mexico or small sombreros, toy double-decker buses for England, whatever you can think of.

In the spirit of Girl Scouts you may want to do something cute with flashlights! Another idea to do with "light" is to do edible fire. This is where you take stones (marshmallows) to make a fire circle, logs (pretzel sticks), and fire (red hots) and instructions on how each table could build their centerpiece as a team. Go on the GS website and I think they have a cute printout "recipe" for this. Good luck!

You could take clear or pale yellow balloons, loop a smooth wire like a pretzel, put it in the balloon before you blow it up with the ends extending thru the stem. Wrap a little foil around the stem end. It should look enough like a light bulb to get the idea across. Hence, you light up the world. If you can, you may want one for each person and you can personalize the balloon with glitter names. You can add flowers or ribbons or whatever to the string.

How about using fall leaves on the table with mini flashlight key chains laying in the leaves. You can use the theme of "Light" and when the dinner is over each guest can take a key chain flashlight home to remind them to "Light up their world". You can even have the room dimly lit with the flash lights all turned on. Just a thought! Perhaps with a candle in the middle around them.
For the weather theme, use umbrellas, put in the center of the table and scatter blue confetti for rain, or cut raindrop shapes from blue construction paper. Use sunglasses on other tables, with yellow confetti
or yellow construction paper suns scattered about. Use winter boots if appropriate for your climate, with white snowflakes scattered about. You also could use mittens or winter hats with white.
Use a mini rake and colored leaf cutouts or a small tree branch and leaf cutouts, or vases of fall leaves.
Depending on how many tables you need to decorate, you probably have umbrellas, boots, mittens, vases, and sunglasses which you already own and can use, or borrow from other parents. Tree branches are free.
The only expense would be construction paper for the cutouts. (03/10/2006)

You could make them out of candles and emergency equipment, colorful flashlights in yellow and red andbits of rope. Put something like flowers or foliage in a colorful rubber boot. Use tiny cocktail umbrellas for accents and use confetti that looks like rain drops or snow. Have little models of emergency vehicles or boats interspersed with them, all in bright primary colors. Then suspend colorful balloons in the midst of them. (03/10/2006)
The only thing I think of right now is: check the thrift stores and garage sales! For our GS banquet last year, I bought 6 vases for $3. (03/11/2006)
