How much water do I mix with a 500mg amoxicillin capsule to give to my pup?

Did the vet say it is ok to mix with water? Our vet always tells us to use a pill pocket or cottage cheese. That also sounds like a huge dose Is that what was prescribed? I guess I am just used to dosing for tiny dogs. Prayer for healing!!!!
For Amoxicillin, the rule of thumb is 10 miligrams per kilogram of weight
5-10 mg per pound. The directions and/or vet will tell you how to mix.
Hi,
First you need to know the dog's weight since the medicine is dosed according to weight. For each pound the dog gets 5-10 mg of the pill. If the dog is about five pounds then that would be 5 pounds times 10 mg of the pill. That is 50 mg.
I never add the amoxillin to water. I always pour out the capsule and put the powder on a little plate. Then I half the powder down to the right dosage for the dog.
This is how many times you would separate the powder into halves, for a 500 milligram pill:
All the powder is 500 mg.
Half the powder is 250 mg.
Half that half powder is 125.
Half of 125 mg is 62.5
Half of 62.5 is 31.25
Half of 31.25 is 15.6
Half of 15.6 is 7.8.
Basically you pour the powder on the table and take a credit card and divide it into halves until you arrive at the correct milligrams for your dogs weight.
For a five pound dog you would half the pile of powder 4 times.
At this point, I pick up the bundle of powder and put it on a spoon and add Karo syrup to the powder and let the dog lick it off the spoon or wipe it on the dogs mouth, while the dog is distracted.
Dosage for Amoxillin for dogs and cats is 5-10mg/pound every 12-24 hours.
This is how I have always given my animals Amoxillin, the kind you buy at PetSmart, the kind called Fish Mox. I have given much more to cats and kittens than I have for dogs.
