Every year I am strapped for money this time of year and see on my local news where to drop off food and other items for our shelters and food banks and wish I could donate to my community. So this year starting right now I have a plan and a hefty donation for next year, all easy on the budget. It is simple. Every week when I shop for groceries or when there is a exceptional sale on canned goods I will buy through the year for my donations. At home I will have a designated place to store these goods. It is very important to look at the expiration dates on the goods and buy those that are good for a good amount of time past my giving date.

Our church has a "Father's Food Closet", each month, the director loads 2 grocery bags of basic pantry items, canned foods, boxed milk, and other items to assist families. During the holiday seasons, the Sunday school classes donate turkeys, hams, dairy products for holiday meals.
Dont forget useful items that people need that arent food. Tooth paste, feminine hygiene products.
This is a great plan. But can you give even a few boxes/cans now? I get the low cash, believe me. But even a few can make a big difference. Don't think your donation has to be big and at the end of the year. People need things all year round.
Something to think about. When you see second hand but never used things at thrift stores, like toothpaste, hand cream, diapers, etc. pick them up and donate right then. People need clothes a lot too, so when you outgrow something, give then when it's fresh. No built up or clutter in your home, and in some cases you don't even need to take it from the store to your home. Take it directly to the donation center. It feels good to give once a year but it feels great to give all year round.
