They will steal the food in the traps. I had success by using a hot glue gun to glue sunflower seeds to the cage or mousetrap. We have caught over 50 chipmunks in the past 2 months. It works great in the live cages.

Gosh - leave the poor things alone - what's a few chipmunks in your yard?
A few chipmunk were cute. We now have so many burrowing under our once beautiful brick entryway. Bricks are just dropping down into their tunnels. We don't have the money to repair the steps and walkway. Thousands in damage.
Those "poor things" have tunnelled around a bunch of my hostas, and other plants and killed them. They've also tunnelled under my front deck and chewed the wood so bad it has to be replaced.
I've always had a few chipmunks in my yard and have never known them to do any damage to anything. We enjoy watching the cute little things. We also have both bird feeders and squirrel feeders out back too. So maybe we are just animal lovers.
