I take care of my four grandchildren during the week. The older two go to school and I take care of the 3 year old and the 9 month old. I always had backpacks and coats on my floors or chairs. Finally I decided to do something about it. I purchased 4 red iron hooks at Hobby Lobby ($1.49 each), two bags of small wooden letters and some wooden plaques at Michaels. I painted the plaques black (with spray paint) and the letters white. Then I put red dots on each of the letters. I hung the hooks with a combination of toggle bolts and wood screws (as needed) and used hot glue to attach the plaques on the wall above each hook. Now the backpacks and coats are no longer on the floor.
Total Time: Not including purchasing items and allowing paint/glue to dry, about an hour.
Supplies:
- 4 decorative iron hooks
- 2 Bags bags of wooden letters (1-1/4")
- 4 wood screws
- 4 toggle bolts - (you can use either or both, depending on your walls) I ended up needing 4 of each)
- 2 Cans spray paint (1 white, 1 black)
- 1 Bottle craft paint (red)
- watercolor brush
- 1 Tube glue for letters
- 2 - 3 Each cotton swabs (to put glue on letters)
- hot glue and glue gun
- Magic Eraser (to remove pencil marks from wall)
- level
- pencil
- ruler
- hammer
- screw gun
Steps:
- Purchase hooks, letters, plaques, paint, and other supplies.
- Use level and pencil to mark wall for hooks.
- Use ruler and pencil to mark distance between hooks.
- Use a hook and pencil to mark where holes will be drilled.
- Use a fine bit on a screw gun to drill a small hole to determine whether a toggle or wood screw is needed.
- Purchase toggles and/or screws.
- Drill 1/4+" holes where toggles are going to be used.
- Insert toggles through holes in hooks and insert into wall. Screw in about 1/2 way. Insert screws in holes where they are to be used. Tighten screws and toggles. Use red paint and a cotton swab to dab paint on screw heads so they match hooks.
- Spray plaques with black paint. Spray letters with white paint. Let dry. Add any dots/decorations to letters with red paint. Let dry.
- Attach letters to plaques with glue (I used E-6000). Let dry an hour or more.
- Attach plaques to wall centered over hooks with hot glue. Use a small level to make sure they are straight up and down.
