I plant them with the top of the bulb just below the surface, 1/4" or so. Don't know if that's optimum, but they seem happy.

Actually, I haven't been able to work in the garden (for health reasons) since the summer of '05. So most of the onions went unharvested that year. Last year we had a dense bed about three feet wide, from an original single row of them! LOL
