I dropped an avocado pit and it split in half. Can it still grow roots and a stem if I put it back in water?

I think you are going to have a harder time. If the roots were already formed you would have a better chance
I would only try this if I thought I would not be able to have a whole avocado pit anytime soon. I like to watch over my "new" starts and would not like to feel that it had very little chance of survival but then, what is there to loose?
I think ThriftyFun has some good suggestions about growing avocados so I'm putting a link just in case you would like to take a look.

Pierce the two halves together with a tooth pick
If the pit broke in half before it started to root, then no it will not root for you. You will need to find another pit.
