I dyed my hair permanent black and it's too dark. I want to dye it to dark brown. What can I do?

You cannot apply brown hair color to hair previously colored black and get a brown shade. There are warm tones underneath the black tint. You can lift just enough of the black tint to make these warm tones more apparent.

This can be done at home in as little as half an hour and without a lot of expense. All that is required is a professional hair color remover diluted to half the regular strength and left on the hair for half the usual time. There are two musts. You must familiarize yourself with proper usage of the color remover and you absolutely must do a strand test first! Only a strand test will tell you the exact amount of time required to achieve the desired results.

You can't dye brown over black..
When I think the color is too dark I wash my hair A LOT more (even twice a day, once in morning and once at night so you don't over dry your hair too) since most colors come out after multiple washing. You may use dish detergent one time (but realize it's more abrasive on hair) vinegar rinses and even dandruff shampoo!!

Hair also absorbs more color towards the ends so if you get a trim you will lose some of the darkness too..
If you still want to continue to color your hair you may consider Semi permanent hair color...it's more forgiving by slowly fading out and comes out after a dozen washes..

I agree with the advice from the previous poster, but all I do is use a good quality dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders. I find that it tends to fade the colour quite a bit. Perhaps this will work for you. Dying too often can damage your hair or make your scalp itchy.

To correct this at home takes forever. The only way I know how to correct this is pay the bucks at a salon, where they STRIP your hair and then re-color it the desired shade.

I know this is old...but for future reference, their is a box at the store called "oops" or something like that. It's about $10 - I used it turned my black dyed hair to golden light brown! There ya go
