Heat oil in medium sauce pan until very hot. Pour kernels into hot oil, and then sprinkle with sugar. Cover and shake gently, popping corn 1-2 minutes. When popping slows, remove from heat and pour popcorn into a large bowl. Salt to taste. Stir to keep from sticking.
An inexpensive and easy treat! Makes a great gift as well. For an added touch, place popcorn in a mason jar and tie with a bow.

I make kettle corn at festivals. The trick I've noticed is to get the sugar and oil to melt completely before it pops. You want to get it to a point where you've almost browned the sugar, and not just have it melt and stick to the popcorn. It's tricky, because the sugar just loves to burn and stick to your pan.
