Help with Jungle Decor

I have been given a wooden zebra and giraffe for my birthday and would like to change the look of my lounge room to incorporate a jungle, African look. Any ideas on how I can do this without too much expense would be greatly appreciated.

Look at your local fabric store. They probably have some animal print fabric that you could use to make cheap throw pillows, curtains, and slipcovers. You may even be able to find some fabric with panels that you could frame and put on the wall as art. Also, check thrift stores for inexpensive artificial plants. (02/03/2005)

My sister went to a scrapbook store and bought a couple of pieces of scrapbook paper that were the jungle theme. She then went and had them color copied and tore them into strips, used wallpaper glue and made a border around her bedroom. It looks very good. And the bottoms don't have to be straight. Her's are jagged and looks like it was put up professionally. Also, she took some of her furniture, primed it and painted over it to look like tiger and zebra. Hope these ideas help. (02/03/2005)

How about pressing some plants to frame? If you have a friend who has some tropical-looking plants (like areca palms, philodendrons, bamboo, etc.), ask them if you can take 3 fronds or leaves. Press them flat between sheets of newsprint (use white paper on the layer that contacts the leaves, to prevent ink from rubbing onto the leaves) lay it on a large flat surface like the floor, and weigh it down with some bricks. Then after they're dry, arrange them in a frame. You could even glue them to a piece of poster board, and "frame" it by gluing sticks and twigs around the edges.

Have fun, and good luck.

Try the Family Dollar store or the like. They always seem to have inexpensive pillows, lamps, and things like that with an Animal or African print. I would try finding sheets to cover existing pillows with or making curtains from some type of African print whether it be sheets or fabric. That should make a great change in the room. (02/03/2005)
