We found these little birds crying at the end of the garden, looking lost, no mother around. We put together some dried leaves and mini twigs in a bamboo basket and wooden cheese box to see if they needed nesting. Surely enough, they got right in and got comfortable.

I hope these baby doves are old enough to eat (seed) on their own. If not, they will have to be force fed something similar to the regurgitate their mother feeds them. This is very difficult, but it can be done. I've done it.
With proper care, this little male and female will be extremely devoted to you. They make great pets. Uncaged, they will stay near you til each comes of age to breed.
I applaud you for your concern and your humane actions.

Great job! Not many people would go to such trouble. Thumbs up!
Thanks, you guys! It's hard to ignore any living thing when it seems out of place or in need. Thank goodness for the abundance of online research (and people of ThriftyFun) to help find solutions!
One year when we were renting a house and building another, doves built their flimsy nest in a pine tree out the kitchen window. I could clearly see what was happening. BUT, one day when I went outside the nest and baby was on the ground. But appeared to be unhurt. I cut the bottom off a gallon milk container, climbed the pine tree, taped the bottom of the milk bottle to the limb where the nest was and put everything back. All was well, momma dove was back taking care of business. What I did not know was why the nest was on the ground in the first place. HAWK. It came back in the next day or so and got the baby. The mother dove sat on the gutter close by and cried for days. I felt bad but tried to help. Sometimes nature has other ideas.
So sad but so sweet of you for all your help. Kudos for your kind heart for trying!
I bet you were crushed. I wonder if maybe we should just leave them on the ground for their mothers. Thanks for trying, you didn't know the hawk would come back.
