There are a few tips you can try to make your bed mattress last longer. I am surprised how many people don't know these tips, so thought I would share.
- Rotate your mattress every 3 months. Flip it over and then flip ends. That way, the husband is sleeping where the wife had been, and your head is now where your feet had been. This helps to stop the "settling" of the mattress, which results in one side breaking down faster than the other.
- Keep your mattress clean. Avoid liquids and such on it that can stain and break down the covering.
- By the end of the life of a mattress, it has normally "gained weight". That is from your cells of skin that have shed and gone into the mattress, and from dust mites. Both can be prevented if you have a plastic or vinyl sheet protector on it (such as those also recommended for prevention of bed bugs). When changing your bed, simply wipe down the mattress pad or use the hose attachment of your vacuum cleaner on it.
- Keep your mattress in a bed frame, not on the floor. On the floor they slide around, which makes them snag and break down faster, as well as get dirtier sooner.

My 2 year old Serta mattress cannot be flipped over. It is a hard frame on the other side that you couldn't lie on. We didn't notice that until we went to flip it about 6 months after purchase. Be sure to check this before purchase.
