You have to make four quilt blocks to find the "hidden" diamond in this quilt design.
Total Time: 1 hour
Yield: 4
Supplies:
- fabric prints and solids
- pins
- scissors
- pencil ruler
- sewing machine
- iron
Steps:
- The number of squares to cut out depends on how large you want your entire quilt to be. For this example, I cut out twelve 5 inch squares and two print 5 7/8 inch squares and two solid 5 7/8 inch squares to the half-square triangle. The corner of each quilt block has one half-square triangle made from the 5 7/8 inch solid and print squares and the remainder of the block is made from coordinating prints. See sample block below.
- First, you make the half-square triangles as follows: Using the 5 7/8 inch squares, solid on one side and print on the other, place right sides together. Draw a pencil line from one corner to the other with a pencil and ruler. Using the sewing machine, stitch 1/4 inch on one side of the pencil line and then on the other side of the pencil line. Using sewing scissors, cut down the pencil line. Fold right side out and press. You now have two half square triangles. Repeat this step for the other two quilt block designs. Design your pre-cut prints with the half-square triangle piece. Pin and sew two together on the top and two together on the bottom, with the half-square triangle placed on the lower right corner for the first block. Repeat this process for the other three blocks. The placement of the half-square triangle will be in different positions. With the second block, it will be placed in the lower left corner, with the third block, it will be placed in the upper right corner, and with the fourth block, it will be placed in the upper left corner, forming a "hidden diamond" in the center as pictured on the project page.
- After sewing the first block together, the design will appear as follows. Next, sew block 1 to block 2, as pictured. Repeat for blocks 3 and 4 and then sew blocks 1 and 2 to blocks 3 and 4, right sides together, forming a diamond in the center.
