I am looking for suggestions for treating a painful eyelid infection, blepharitis.
Blepharitis can be very painful but there are things you can do at home to help relieve the pain.
If you have been to a doctor then you should follow any instructions provided. If you have not seen a doctor your local pharmacist (they have almost as much training as a general practitioner [sometimes more] should be able to advise you on some cleaning products as well as eye drops and a good dandruff shampoo.
Basic care is just using a nice warm cloth over closed eyelids and then cleaning the lids with the cloth after about 5-10 minutes. (However long the cloth stays warm so use it as warm as comfortable.)
Gently scrub the lids but do not press on the eye. This is usually recommended to be done 2-3 times a day.
Eye drops are also necessary to keep the eyes lubricated - Artificial tears only but any brand - do not use the drops that say 'gets the red out'.
A good dandruff shampoo just in case this is part of the problem.
The pharmacist may also point you to a good over-the-counter antibiotic that can be used in the eye area.
There are also several products that can be used when soaking your eyes with cotton or a cloth. Just be very sure to use a clean cloth or gauze pad with each treatment.
There is a lot of informatio on the Internet concerning blepharitis but here are a couple of links to get you started. It is always best to understand why we have a condition like this so hopefully we can prevent it from returning.
Wet compresses and massages are best for this. A doctor can prescribe medication. You also need to remove makeup thoroughly every night if you wear it.
Keep clean and free of chemicals, maybe a antibiotic cream!
Your doc should have given you palliative care treatments that will work for you. You have to be very careful with treatments if you have any other health issues.
Don't use any over the counter products until you check with your doctor to make sure there will be no issues. This is very important!
Some people find a very gentle eye massage to help. It must be done with very clean hands and some people like a warm towel over the eye and the massage over the towel. This should not cause any issues, but I am not a medical professional so check with your doctor first before trying this.
This is a most frustrating condition. I think there are Facebook support groups for it sometimes it helps to have others to vent.
Prayers for management of your condition!
Here on the islands the local people normally will use salt water from the lagoon to help clean their eyes. This is also good for pink eye. However, a warm cloth on the eyes is best and using a clean Q-tip to clean the eyes is recommended. A doctor should give you eye drops for your eyes. I know that I have also used a warm tea bag to place on the eye to help with the pain and help the healing process.
I have this same condition and your doctor is correct - there is no cure but from personal experience I can say that if treated for several weeks it will almost disappear and just continue treatment occasionally and, hopefully, you may hardly know you have it..
I know the pain will go away after several warm sittings (sit down, turn nice music on or a talking book, or soak your nails in warm oil and relax for 10 minutes) then just gently rub your eye lids for a minute or two.
When I had a sty on my eyelid, I asked my father-in-law, an optometrist, what to do. He told me to boil water and then add about a teaspoon of boric acid to the water.
Then, after the water cooled a bit, make a warm compress and hold it on my eye for about 15 minutes. It brought the sty to a head and the swelling went down.
