Take one sip of pickle juice, not even a teaspoon. It has electrolytes galore, 20 times more than energy drinks. Immediate relief.

Try one of the over the counter meds. Zantac or Prevacid is usually tried first. Get the generic though, Rantanidine for Zantac and I dont know for Prevacid but it will say on the bottle. I take a big swig of Mylanta from my fridge.

If this is more than occasional, try the meds. If they don't help within a day or 2 go to MD. It could be an underlying problem, like ulcers. Good Luck.

If you want a true home remedy, try baking soda. The instructions are on the arm and hammer container. It's something like a half tsp per glass of water. Pickle juice or vinegar can help, too, depending on the reason for the heartburn. The OTC heartburn med work well, if you are just looking for inexpensive treatment.

However, reflux and heartburn that sticks around for a while needs to be looked at, as they can be symptoms of something more serious and they can cause permanent damage themselves.

Be careful when you drink vinegar because the next day it will leave your body explosively if you're not careful, especially apple cider vinegar.

I try a stick of gum first. Alot of times this will take care of mild heartburn and I like that fact that you are not taking any medication. I understand that chewing gum causes more saliva and that is what helps with heartburn. If that doesn't work then I go to Tums.

Anything acidic (vinegar, etc.) will not help heartburn, because heartburn is caused by too much acid in the stomach. Chewing gum is also not a good idea, for it makes you swallow air, another contributor to heartburn.

Baking soda, as mentioned earlier, can help. Also, be sure to sleep with the head of your bed slightly elevated. Change your diet to avoid anything that will make your stomach produce more acid. No greasy foods, go easy on calcium-rich foods, no spicy food at all, and cut back on tough foods like meat. The idea is to eat bland food until your stomach heals, then re-introduce those foods gradually when you're feeling better.

If the heartburn doesn't go away in a few days, definitely see a doctor.

I have found that chewing gum does help mild heartburn. I was told that it creates more salivia which helps heartburn. I know that there is no one size fits all for such problems and I have taken some quite potent medications which leads to other problems.

My advice is to start small and find what works for you.

Chew mint gum. I have heartburn occasionally and chewing mint flavored gum helps to put the fire out.

This isn't exactly a "home recipe", but I found that Tums work as good as any Heart Burn store-bought medication!
