Diamond Post Medal for All Time! 1,246 Posts I spent my birthday up in the San Francisco Bay area. Walking around town looking for a place to eat, I noticed the price of clam chowder had skyrocketed like mad. I skipped out on having some, but since the craving stuck, my mother and I decided to make it from scratch once I got home. It's not hard to do, and costs a fraction of the price marked at the restaurants. Bread bowl optional, but highly recommended!
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 50 minutes
Yield: 6 servings
Ingredients:
- 13 ounces clams (2 x 6.5 ounce cans)
- 1 cup potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 cup onion, chopped
- 1/4 cup carrot, chopped
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3 Tbsp butter
- 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- salt and pepper to taste
- bread bowls (optional)
Steps:
- In a large pot, fry the onions and carrots in butter over medium heat until onions are soft and translucent.
- Add the potatoes and fry while stirring frequently, about 5 minutes.
- Add flour and continue to cook, stirring frequently, a few minutes.
- Switch the heat to low and add the chicken broth and clams (with all the clam juice). Mix well and let it cook until potatoes are fully softened, about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Stir in the cream and allow to simmer until the soup is thick and creamy. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- If you are using bread bowls, slice off the tops and pluck out a good amount of bread from the inside. Toast bowls and lids in toaster oven or oven until crisped. Ladle in the clam chowder and serve immediately.

Thank you Suz! It was super yummy and comforting. My whole family got to enjoy it for the price of one restaurant serving.. (plus some left over)! x

They do indeed rock! It's always hard to say no to the bread bowl when it's the option against a plain old bowl you can't bite into :D Thank you!!!!!!!!!!
