Homemade Hairspray

This homemade hairspray really works and doesn't polute the atmosphere or put toxic chemicals on your hair. Just chop 1 lemon (or orange for dry hair) and place in a pot with 2 cups water. Boil down by half. Cool, strain, and place liquid in a spray bottle. Add 1/8 cup (1 oz.) rubbing alcohol. Store up to a month un-refrigerated, or put in refrigerator for longer. You can omit the rubbing alcohol if stored in the fridge. Lasts about 2 weeks. Shake a little before using.

This sounds wonderful, especially that you've used it for years with good results. I have two questions:

1 - Does the lemon juice hairspray lighten hair the way we used to give ourselves home highlights back in the 60s with lemon juice? (lol, hoping you say yes, I'd love to have those natural looking streaks again:)

2 - You mention that orange is for dry hair, does that mean it moisturises once it's made into the hairspray?

I'm giving this a thumbs up, but would really appreciate your reply to my questions if you can.

Hi frugalsunnie,
I couldn't say if using lemons instead of oranges lighten hair since I used oranges. I always had oranges around and they worked great, so I didn't try the lemons. I would imagine they'd lighten a little, but that's just a guess. And I'm not sure how much the oranges moisturized my hair, but I did notice that it wasn't as stiff and dry as when using hairspray, so it might have.

Although it could have just been that I wasn't using harsh chemicals on my hair with the natural homemade method. I copied this down years ago, just as it was printed, so I don't know the why in everything it said. All I know is it works great, is better for us and the environment, and it's sure cheaper than buying hairspray.

Thank-you for the reply! I love that the homemade hairspray using oranges meant that you didn't suffer 'helmet-head'. I need hairspray but have been using bobbie pins, barrettes, and headbands because I cannot stand the 'helmet head' feel and look.

I think I'll put oranges on the grocery list and brew some of this up:)
