baking soda can be used to increase a pool's alkalinity levels just as effectively as an expensive option from a store. Common household bleach is used to shock the pool, muriatic acid can be used to lower alkalinity levels, and borax can be used to raise the pH level. Always check how much of each product should be used before using them in a swimming pool.
