House Training a Rescue Dog?

I adopted a rescue 3 days ago that was supposedly house-trained. I feed him the same time every day. We walk the same time every night for 30 to 45 minutes. He has yet to poop on our walks, but inevitably when we get home and my back is turned he poops on the floor. Any suggestions? I know this is all new for him. I just don't want it to become a habit.

Hi,

Thank you so much for adopting and rescuing!
I would always advise that you change over to a grain free food. There are several types you can buy that are not expensive. Rachel Ray has a line of food you can buy or there is a brand called diamond that has no grains. My favorite is the lamb and rice, or the beef and rice.

The reason I say this is that corn in dog food just produces more and more stool. You will find your pet going out all the time to go potty.

Also, are you using a word, such as lets go potty? When your pet comes in the house and starts to go potty, it is the exact time to say in an excited voice: Lets go potty outside!!! At this time, act like it is a great thing to be going outside, even walk a little faster, and act all excited.

Usually when I am retraining or housetraining for the first time there is no substitute for a wire crate, which will eventually become the den for the dog. It is a great place to put the dog when you are not able to watch and the dog, so that he or she will not get into trouble.

I always take my dogs out over ten times a day, at least make sure to take the dog out after all meals, and after drinking and after napping and after playing.

I think you are doing great! Keep going on the going outside, use a word like lets go do our business, and describe the action, when he is doing his business as in ' you're going potty! Yaaay!

I wish you the best on your potty training adventure!

You can try the following:

Step 1
Praise him when he does what he is supposed to do. Take food away between meals.

Step 2
Crate him if necessary.

Training dog.

Step 1
When you catch him scold him.

Step 2
Then take him outside, when he goes praise him and give treats.

Step 3
You could tether him to you until he starts going outside, so you can catch him before he goes in the house.

Step 4
Be patient in the shelter the dog usually goes to the bathroom in his cage he will catch on but be persistent.
