I've been trying for almost a year to get my mother-in-law's dog to pee outside. She's an older Boxer and hasn't ever been made to go outside to potty. My mother-in-law doesn't take her out and won't even let me try the crate training because in her eyes she thinks it "abusive".
This has gotten so bad that my one year old Terrier Fiest mix won't even go outside. You take her out and she just sits. I don't know what else to do. I'm so ashamed to actually have company over because of the smell, that my husband and mother-in-law think is in my head. No amount of cleaning helps because as soon as I sweep, scrub, and mop there's already pee or poop on the floor! Help!

This can be a major problem and it is also a health issue.
Step 1
Every hour on the hour take the two dogs outside. Take them for a walk and make sure they pee and poop when outside.
Step 2
Keep track of when you feed the dog. It is said that a dog can hold going to the toilet for 30 minutes of his age plus 1. So if the dog is 5 he should be able to hold going to the toilet for around 3 hours.
Step 3
You can also try to use pee pads in your home and teach the dog to go on them. If the dog won't go outside then it will need to use pee pads.
Step 4
If she is giving you a problem limit the access of your home where the dog is allowed. If you have a laundry room or another room the dog can be in this would help. Put a pee pad down in this room. The dog won't sleep in their own pee or poop. It will learn to use the pee pad.
Step 5
You will need to clean the smell of pee out of your home. I would go to the pet store and buy some special cleaner for this purpose. Make sure you clean all surfaces in the home so the dog can't smell his pee again.
