How Do I Help My Puppy Walk Again?

August 30, 2022

My 6 week old puppy ate wet puppy food that was unsealed in the can in the refrigerator. Not only was he lethargic and had diarrhea, but he lost use of his limbs as well. My puppy can not take a step without falling over.

I took him to the vet and left with pre filled syringes to give him every 24 hours but the vet did not explain clearly on why his limbs are failing. What can I do to help my puppy walk again?

Bacteria like Staphylococcus can grow and cause food poisoning when ingested. This is common in foods like dairy products, gravy and sausage. These bacteria usually have a short incubation period after ingestion, meaning your pup is likely to get sick quite quickly after eating. Signs of food poisoning in dogs can vary widely, including tremors and difficulty moving. The tremors may be due to cerebellar disorders, such as those that occur in poisoning in dogs.
The prognosis will depend on the toxin, health of the puppy, as well as other factors. While some types of food poisoning run their course and improve on their own, others are more serious and even deadly. The only way to truly know if your dog needs medical attention is to call your vet.

Your puppy needs to be monitored, since continuous vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration. Make sure your puppy has access to plenty of water to rehydrate itself as his body attempts to purge the bacteria.

If I were you, I would call the vet again and have him explain clearly the instructions. Unless there is a vet on this website, most of us are unqualified to answer this question.

Stumbling, staggering or lack of muscle control is one of the symptoms of food poisoning, along with others: diarrhea, vomiting, excessive drooling, difficult breathing, blood in the stool, difficulty urinating or discolored urine, lack of appetite, hyperactivity, weakness, lethargy, tremors, seizures

In many cases, food poisoning can be mild and your puppy can recover within a few days. When he recovers, then the stumbling, staggering or lack of muscle control will pass.

You should call your vet and ask about the medication, and also ask what other things should I be doing to help my puppy recover.
It seems they are taking this casually while it is serious for you.
Call them and ask for answers on how long before your puppy will start eating again and what to do if he gets diarrhea again; what should you do.

If the vet doesn't seem concerned, ask him/her if you should be concerned. Will my puppy recover?
Make a list of things you need answers to and make sure they answer all of your concerns.
If you're not satisfied with their answers, ask them if perhaps you should consult another vet.
Then you will have to decide for yourself;
Are you satisfied that your puppy is on the mend?
Try to do this ASAP, as I feel sure that time is of the essence here.

Shaking like he was cold, can barely move are some of the symptoms of food poisoning. Some food intoxications can be life-threatening since bacteria contained in the spoilt food may release toxins causing serious complications. Treatments vary depending on the type of poison and the amount eaten.

Supportive medications may help your dog's kidneys and liver process the poison and heal. Your puppy has been examined by a veterinarian, I would recommend that your puppy see your vet again, he should be taking the treatment recommended by the veterinarian.
