When I took my two rescue kitties to the vet, he found them to be a bit overweight. He asked how much I was feeding them. At that time I fed them a combination of Purina Pro Plan Salmon and Rice mixed with an equal amount of Blue Buffalo Longevity. According to the manufacturer's recommendation they were being fed 1/2 cup of food twice a day.
My vet strongly recommended that I reduce their food by half, noting that the bag recommendations are generally too high.
They have been on this reduced diet for about a year and a half and are showing no ill effects from the smaller quantity of food, aside from starting to pester for dinner a couple of hours early:)
You might want to verify the amount you are feed your pet with your vet on your next visit.

They are so adorable, hugging one another in the bright sunny window! Just love this photo!
Your Vet is right on the money when he states that the recommendations on the bag is too much. This is also true for dog food recommendations. I feed my dogs less that stated. I noticed that they were getting too heavy. That was 6 months ago and they have slimmed down slowly to the weight they should be at. The pet food market is out sell pet food. This is over a billion dollar industry and they love to make as much money as they can on our pets. Don't be fooled it is all pet companies because that's ultimately what they are in business for, to make money for themselves and the shareholders. Find a good pet food and just feed a little less. Your pets will be healthier and live longer.
It IT is an adorable photo. I also had our vet tell me that my 2 indoor cats were chubby. My 2 outside ones are fine. I told him that they take after their Mother (me).
