We purchased this bookcase that was owned by a 90 year old man. The person who sold it to us thought it was an antique. He said it was probably 50 or 60 years old. It is solid wood. Anyone have any ideas how old this might be? An interior designer thought late '60s or early '70s and didn't think it fit in with the 50s era decor at all. I'm thinking maybe possibly from the '40s.

The three clues I see (for the U.S.) are:
-- Dark lacquer, popular in the 1940s
-- Scalloped framing, popular in the 1940s and 10950s (think valances in kitchens)
-- Decorative wood rosettes, which are still popular to this day (usually for country decor).
I would look for a manufacturer mark under or behind it. If it is not there, the next step is to go to a dealer.
I looked and there is nothing showing a number or manufacturer.
I was thinking maybe 1940's also.
I believe the 60's is accurate. Hard to tell without looking at sides.
The sides are just flat with no ornamentation. Goes flush to the ground, no legs.
