How long does puppy house training take? I've become frustrated with my 5-month old pups because I was crate training and following all the guidelines (take outside regularly, praise him for going outside, don't scold for accidents, etc), but it seems to have no effect. I know I need patience, but I don't know what timeline to expect.
You didn't mention what breed these puppies are? Sometimes it depends on type of dog. I have A Lab. retriever and he's just like a child, it took us 4 years before he out grew he's puppy stage. Hope this helps a little. (10/30/2006)

I'll tell you now. If you have a fenced in yard, put in a dog door. If you have an older dog, this will help the younger ones learn. I have 4 indoor dogs and I wouldn't have any home again without a dog door. Life saver for people that have to get up in the middle of the night with a dog. I highly recommend dog doors. (10/30/2006)

I've house-trained a border collie in as little as 6 weeks, and chihuahuas in about 5 or 6 months. Yes, it does depend on the breed. The chi's aren't as submissive as the border collie was. And once the older dogs are trained, they train the younger. The younger follow what they do. (10/30/2006)

I have a rottie-shepherd mix and she was pretty much completely trained by 6 months. But she did have occasional accidents for a while after that but nothing to serious and usually only after we had been gone all day and not had a chance to let her out. I do agree though it depends on the dog and breed. Good luck! (11/14/2006)

It's been awhile since you posted this. How is your pup doing now? Housebreaking a pup shouldn't take long at all. My doodle was completely housebroken at around 10-11 weeks old because she had her little potty area outside and a feeding/watering schedule. She also is half Poodle so she learns everything very quickly.
My border collie rapidly (and I mean in the space of a week) learned to hold in the house after 3-4 months.
My first border terrier took 4-5 months to start showing evidence of holding on his own.
My current border terrier pup has been easiest, hes been with us a week and although he does go in the house, he is showing clear evidence of holding it in as we can trust him for about an hour at a time.
At an estimate 3-4 months to start seeing coherent results.
But think about it, how did I find this thread in the first place? I'm wondering it myself despite going through it twice. (05/24/2008)
