Cleaning shrimp at home yourself can save you some bucks. Here's a simple way about it.
At the very top of third shell from the top of the shrimp, push down towards the tail with your thumb nail. The rest of the shell will come right off. The trick is at the third shell.
Now that the shell is off, you can use a paring knife to wedge under the vein in the middle of the shrimp's back. Lift your knife up like a lever and the whole vein will come right out.

When I get to the nasty vein process, I take out a trusty but small crochet hook, to poke, catch and pull out quickly. Works like a knife with a hook.
Love your idea using a crochet hook to pull out the vein! Truly excellent suggestion. However, may I suggest cutting the carapace down the back instead of removing the shell? Cutting just through the shell and into the meat far enough to access and remove the vein means keeping the shell intact enough to seal in the moisture when broiling or roasting the shrimp.
