When you have wax buildup on the sides of a jar candle, it's called tunneling. If a candle was not burned for long enough the first few times it was lit, the wax that was melted will be softer, even after it hardens again. This is called the wax memory. Each time you relight your candle, this wax will be the first to melt, and then it will start melting downwards rather than outward. This video shows you a tip on how to fix this problem.
To avoid it in the future, light your new candles for at least 3 hours the first few times to allow the wax to melt all the way to the sides of the candle.
