In the area we live in, strawberry picking season will soon be over. They have been so good this year.
I had never been able to keep strawberries in the refrigerator. Within a day or so, they would shrivel and lose the flavor.
Seven days ago, I had some fresh local strawberries. After eating some, I found this tip on the internet that tells a good method for keeping the berries fresh for 7 days.
I wanted to give it a trial so I filled a quart jar with berries and sealed as directed. When I had eaten half of them, I switched to a pint jar and continued to enjoy snacking on them until I got down to 2. For my trial, I left them in the jar to see how long they would keep.
Here it is the 7th day and they still look fresh and the flavor is just as good as the day I got them. The jar method works!! I don't know how long after seven days that they will stay fresh. Seven days is long enough for me. See the picture of the two in my hand that have been in the refrigerator for 7 days.
How to do it: Pack berries loosely in a glass canning jar with a metal lid and band. Tighten lid and refrigerate. It is recommend to not wash them but the ones I tried were a little gritty and I had rinsed them off and removed the leaves. They were dry when I put them in the jar.
I got some more today and I am excited to know that I can keep them fresh, in a jar, in the refrigerator.
I just had to share this tip. I hope you will try this.
