How to Keep Thread From Unwinding

Silver Answer Medal for All Time! 440 Answers

Pictures showing how to keep thread from unwinding.

  1. Make notches with a knife on a bobbin and fix the end of the wound thread in these notches.
  2. Some spools have a ring. You can pop this ring up, wrap the thread around the visible part of the bobbin and then pop back down the ring to keep the thread from unwinding. Not all spools have this ring. Then make such ring yourself.

How to make the ring that will keep thread from unwinding:

  • Cut a square of baking paper with sides larger than the spool.

  • Draw the outline of the bobbin in the center of the square. You will have a circle in the center.

  • Cut out the circle.

  • Cut a strip of baking paper about 1 cm wide and long enough to wrap around the bobbin.

  • Slide the square of paper onto the spool.

  • Wrap the strip around the visible part of the bobbin, fixing the end of the strip with a piece of double-sided tape. The top of the thread and the visible part of the bobbin will be covered with baking paper.

  • Squeeze hot glue around the bobbin covered with paper to form the ring.

  • Wait for the hot glue to harden good.

  • Separate the ring from the paper. The ring that will keep thread from unwinding is ready. Wrap the thread around the visible part of the bobbin and snap the ring up.

How about some pictures? The instructions are for "bobbin" but your introducing comments sound like you are talking about thread spools.

The whole things sounds like a lot of unnessary work.

The words "bobbin" and "spool" were used almost interchangeably a number of years ago. Nowadays, however, most commercially-purchased spools of thread include ways and means to keep thread from unravelling. Smaller bobbins, on the other hand, the smaller "spools" which fit into our sewing machines (typically for the bottom thread), those are a constant pain the behind due to the ease with which they unravel.

The best solution I've found thus far is to simply keep the toe separators from pedicure appointments (and yes, I wash them with hot soapy water before using).

Bobbins fit reasonably easily in the space made for toes.
