Silver Answer Medal for All Time! 440 Answers Once I wanted to crochet a micro amigurumi, but I did not have a thin crochet hook at hand. I got the idea to make this crochet hook myself from a needle. It's not difficult at all and will cost you almost nothing.
Total Time: 25 min
Supplies:
- 1 thin hand-sewing needle
- 1 plastic non-hollow stick with a diameter of not more than 1 cm, a length of about 10 cm, I used a handle from a broken comb
- 1 empty pen refill
- 1 pen
- wire cutters
- metal nail file
- pliers
- lighter
- saw
- awl
- petroleum jelly
- hot glue
Steps:
- Using wire cutters very carefully cut a piece of the eye of the needle on one side.
- Using a metal nail file form a hook.
- Now you have to make a comfortable handle. Make sure your plastic stick is sharp at one end. Sharpen it if necessary.
- Holding the needle with pliers, heat the opposite side of the hook. Carefully insert it into the sharp end of the plastic stick. Repeat this several times until the needle fixes well and deeply.
- Gently sand irregularities on the plastic stick. Basically, the hook is ready, and you can start to crochet. But since your hook is very thin, you need to make a cap for it.
- Heat the awl a bit and expand one side of the empty pen refill.
- Put the extended end of the pen refill on the hook and cut off the excess, leaving 1 cm above the hook. Heat the end and squeeze it between the pliers. Round off the end. The inner part of the cap is ready.
- Saw off a piece of the pen a little more than the inner part of the cap. This will be the outer part. You have to fix the inner part of the cap inside the outer part using hot glue. So that the hook can be easily removed after the hot glue has hardened, lubricate the hook handle. To make it easy for you to remove excess hot glue, lubricate also on the outside of the outer part of the cap.
- Insert the hook into inner part of the cap. Then squeeze the hot glue into the outer part of the cap on both sides and quickly insert the inner part of the cap with the hook into the outer part.
- Wait for the hot glue to harden. Then remove the hook, remove excess glue and round off the edges of the cap. Your tiny hook with a comfortable handle and very durable cap is ready. Now you can start crocheting.
