My sons got into a bucket of roofing tar 18 years ago (then only 3 and 4 years old!) They covered themselves from head to toe with it. I learned that it does not just come off in the bath! The photo I have shared was taken after three days of me working on them and cleaning them up.
So, if you ever find yourself covered in tar, here is what you do. Get vaseline and baby oil. Rub it on nice and thick and work it in then wipe it off with something you can throw away afterwards, because it will be ruined. Be sure to not touch anything too because it can get real messy until you have completely removed all the tar! If it gets in your hair then cutting it out may be the only option. Hope this tip can help someone!

Haha! I bet that wasn't fun for you but your boys sure do look like they had a good time. :) What a cute picture.
Omg I remember this... lol :-D
I will tell that I have used WD40 not only on my body but also on cars and carpet that have had tar on them. Works like a charm.
Just about anything greasy or oily removes the hard stuff to get out including tar. Soap actually makes it worse by spreading it out. What rascals, lol, they had some fun.
I found that olive oil removed black rust paint that had splattered on my face. The last time I had some on my hands I used coconut oil. I prefer coconut oil.
Butter is a perfect solution and I know what I am talking about suffering from what could be called a tar curse: in my childhood, wearing my bathing costume I sat in a rowboat which had been coated just a few minutes before with tar. A few years later, being on the top of a ladder to cauterize a tree's cuts with a tar sprayer, I pushed on the tar sprayer exactly at the same time than a very sudden and strong gust of wind which sent all the tar back towards my face and arms.
