Hydrogen Peroxide For Ear Wax

A quick tip for keeping ear wax build-up from causing problems: I took my mother to the doctor who made her hearing aid, because ear wax had built up on it so bad, that it didn't work. The doctor told her to use a drop of hydrogen peroxide in each ear every evening and it would help cut down on the wax.

I tried this on my son, he has such small ear canals and a terrible wax build-up and even a hard time hearing. So far, so good, he said it was "bubbly, cold and tickly" but already after a week, he's hearing better and his ears don't itch from the wax. Simple and inexpensive.

Hydrogen peroxide is also good for killing colds in the beginning. It really does work. I got an eyedropper and put hydrogen peroxide in each ear. Let it sit there a while, then drain out on a towel. It's helped me several times and with no ill effects. I also wouldn't recommend digging in your ears with anything. Just let the peroxide loosen and help and let the wax come out on it's own.

I work in a school and the school nurse also recommends using hydrogen peroxide in the ears routinely to avoid ear wax build-up. (07/12/2007)

I was deaf for over a week due to trying to dislodge wax and pushing it on to the drum. Got tinnitus whilst deaf. Was horribly disorientating and unbalancing. After looking up on the internet I found a thread advising use of hydrogen peroxide. After several nights usage it cleared the blockage, but the advice was to dilute it with water.

Sorry I can't remember the proportions. Go cautiously, don't use it neat. The first time I tried it on my hand neat (as a tester) it burnt my skin. Imagine if that happens to the inside of your ears, ouch. (04/09/2008)

I have had ear wax build up problems since childhood. My ENT Dr. told me to drip 3% hydrogen peroxide into my Eustachian tubes to kill microbes and loosen/remove ear wax. It works wonderfully. If the HP begins to fizzle in your ear, this is perfectly normal. The fizzing is a chemical reaction with Catalase which is an enzyme present in some bacteria.

In microbiology, the Catalase test uses HP to help identify certain types of bacteria. The fizzing will literally loosen up ear wax build up and it can come out in small chunks. I know it is gross, but it is true. (04/16/2008)

No. Doing that kills the good bacteria also, and that is bad. Mineral oil is better. (05/19/2008)

Hydrogen peroxide does work. I work at an Urgent Care facility and that's what we use to irrigate patient's ear's. Well we use half water and half peroxide to irrigate the ears. It works. Sometimes it may take a while, but once the wax starts loosening up, it slides right out. (08/03/2008)

I just came back from the ER because my right ear hurt so badly. It felt like a chopstick was poking it continuously. I explained to the doctor that I put a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide 10 hours earlier. He checked my ear and the ear canal is scorched. He said to use one half water and one half hydrogen peroxide next time. He's just glad that my ear drum is in perfect condition. But my right ear is hurting horribly right now. I got a prescription for a pain killer and antibiotic. (10/13/2008)

The best thing that I find, is to get a syringe, and a bucket of warm water, and get someone else to squirt the warm water into your ear, squirting it quite hard, this lets the warm water get in behind the build up of wax and pushes it all out. Make sure you have a towel on the floor, and another bucket resting underneath your ear, as there is a lot of gross, waxy water that will come out.

I have had excessive wax build up for most of my life. For those of you who believe in Natural Medicine, use these. If you don't believe in treating the problem the natural way, then by all means continue to use what floats your boat. I am 40 and my grandmother is Cherokee Indian.

For most of my life, she has handmade Ear Candles. I faithfully use ear candles every 3 weeks. My right ear produces more wax than the other so to keep the ear hurts, infections and sinus issues at bay, this is what I do.

I am a Medical Device rep that specializes in the Neurology arena. Although I make my living with traditional medicine and reimbursement, I personally try every issue the natural way. Most physicians do not recommend this type of Homeopathy treatment.

I can say with conviction and experience, it works. They are not approved by the FDA and this is the reason most MD's do not use. All a money game here in the great USA. Order them in bulk off the internet and save $$$. Just buy the plain ones, no scented ones are needed. Retail at stores are about $2 a piece.

You can buy them online from people who make them for about a $1. I use 2 for each ear, each time. Just google Ear Candles Wholesale and you can find them. Hydrogen peroxide does dry the inside of the ear. So, using Olive Oil is the best route. After I use an ear candle, I drop a few drops of Olive oil in the ear. Just be careful when you ear candle. I am the mother of 5 children and 2 of them have tiny ear canals. They get so much build up that they cant hear a thing. First day I have them take a long hot bath and let their ears soak in the tub for at least a half an hour. The next day I fill the ear with oil (either Olive oil or Mineral oil, not Baby, too drying) and let sit for ten minutes on each side. This really softens up all that wax. The 3rd day I start with the peroxide, everyday til a big chunk floats to the top. Gross and sometimes smelly, but it works everytime. (02/07/2009)

This is genius. I stumbled across this site while on a desperate search for a solution to my lifelong issue with hard, compacted earwax build-up that didn't involve an expensive doctor's visit. None of the ear drops were helping and I sure didn't want to be shoving a Q-tip in there. I was almost to the point of trying ear candles, even though I know they're a hoax, because it was so uncomfortable. Then I went out and bought some hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol.

I let an earful of half-water, half-peroxide sit in my ear for about fifteen minutes, drained it out, repeated the process four times on that ear alone, and then used a bulb syringe with warm water to flush the ear canal several times, and wow. It was nasty to see what came out. Then I dropped in some alcohol to help dry the ear out, used a blow dryer on the warm (not hot) low setting, and voila! I even did this with my other ear, which I didn't think was clogged at all, and a bunch of wax came out. It's a miraculous treatment. I'm so glad I found this remedy, because my hearing is much better and I don't have that stupid ringing in my ears anymore, or that clogged underwater feeling.

Thank goodness for hydrogen peroxide. (02/14/2009)

Just wanted to point out that Carbamide Peroxide (the stuff in Ear Wax Remedies and Teeth whitening products) and plain old Hydrogen Peroxide are somewhat different. Carbamide Peroxide contains only 35% Hydrogen Peroxide. This may explain why using HP has been very effective for some people, and needed an ER visit for others.

Carbamide Peroxide shouldn't hurt at 10% (like in mouth ulcer products) concentration (3% hydrogen peroxide equivalent) but it might hurt at 35% (12% equivalent), causing white chemical burns on skin and gums.
