I am just trying to figure out what these caterpillars are. I am not sure if they are good or bad.

Since they are in wood,
I don't think they are good. They may be carpenter ants. Put some in a sealed plastic bag and take it to a place that sells pesticides. They will help you.

They look like Soldier beetle larvae that feed on wood in the day time
