I am trying to find out what this is. I am not sure what it's for. It was found in a house. Any ideas are much appreciated.

The recess looks to be there to make sure that things don't roll off the table. I'm not sure the exact purpose of it, however.
Neat piece.
Does it stand so the oval is vertical? It reminds me of a multiple purpose piece where a mirror went in the insert and clothing was hung from the metal rods. I can't quit tell from the photo if it would stand that way.
If not, I am at a loss.
Could be used as an entry table?
The top looks like an armoire or cabinet door, probably made out of oak. The base looks entirely different so I think this is two pieces that have been combined together.
I would probably use it as a plant stand under a window or as a side table.
