I pulled up a composite deck yesterday. I found 3 piles, two near where the deck attached to the house and one about 18 inches away from the house attachment. The piles are about 4-6 inches around and 2-3 inches high. They seem to be round "pellets", clumped together like a tater tot. Any ideas what this is? I live in Vancouver.

These are Termite Eggs! This is a lot of infestation ! Here is a link to the history of this Pest/Insect - en.wikipedia.org/
It looks like either a dampwood termite or a drywood termite but no matter, it really looks serious.
I would suggest you call one or two pest control companies and ask for a free estimate for killing whatever you have. They should give you an estimate and give a written paper showing everything and everywhere they will be working.
You will at least know how serious an infestation of 'whatever' it is you have and also know where the infestation is located.
If you can afford it, It is always best to have this work done by experts but if you cannot afford it right now you will at least know what kind of problems you will have to deal with.
After you know exactly what you have and how large a problem you can make a trip to Ace or True Value Hardware stores and tell them about your problem. There are products available to kill most anything - but it will be chemicals and will have to be used exactly like the instructions read.
These stores usually have qualified people to help you find the right product.
Homeowners insurance will not cover repairs for this type of problem.
You really need to get rid of these as soon as possible and call to have your home inspected. These are termine eggs and if you have this many under the desk your home could be infested with termites and it needs to be take care of really soon.
