My Hartmann cushion wardrobe trunk has these numbers in the leather handle and paper on bottom under a drawer that says 1912-1926. My number on the leather starts with 12 does that mean year or is it serial number?

Here are some facts about a trunk. Did you know that latches were not used to close a trunk until after 1872? Trunks were closed with leather straps before this. I would need to know a bit more about this item and would need to see how it was constructed. The construction of the item is the best way to help identify the item and how old it is. Here is a great site I have found to help you out and they go into complete details about the design of the older trunks and what year they were deigned like that. hmsantiquetrunks.com/
I have reason to believe the 12 refers to the shape of the key used - it can refer to "HTM-12"- different Hartmann trunks have different keys and a link that lists all of them is here www.brettunsvillage.com/
