I just moved into a prewar house in Jersey and I keep seeing these small black bugs around the wood and occasionally on the walls. Any idea what these are? Thank you.

These look like water bugs to me. Spray with an insecticide.
I think it's a spider beetle. They're common around homes and spread no diseases and don't bite. They are harmless to people and pets. They aren't harmless to your food though because they will eat it along with hair too.
It is either a spider beetle or a Giant Conifer Aphid, although since you are on the east coast, I am leaning to the latter. When I blow the photo up on my computer it blurs so I am not 100% positive.
Either one is harmless. They come in the house for food and shelter.
If you have just a few, I would take them outside (just me) and put them far from the house. Some people vacuum them up and then dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the canister into a bag and take it away from the house. Then do a good scrub down of the area with your usual cleaning products.
If you start to get more, you could be getting an infestation. Look for open places in walls, door ways, window sills and close those up.
Also if you keep brush and debris (dead leaves, weeds and such) from around the perimeter of your house, that can go a long way to solving the problem as these critters, and many others like debris for food and shelter, and then go inside for comfort.
If it persists you may have to call someone to take care of it, but usually a few simple, non chemical actions can stop the issue.
Post back with an update.
