Identifying Tiny Black Biting Bugs?

Identifying Tiny Black Biting Bugs - long thin black bugI just need some advice, we've had small black bugs outside that jump, but don't fly the past week. We ain't sure what they are or if it's the weather? We've been bitten a few times and not sure if that's the bugs? Every time I or my dog goes outside they are attached to my trousers or socks and his fur. It seems to happen when we go in the garden.

I couldn't see any bugs when I came downstairs this morning, nothing in the water dishes. I let the dog outside and he brought some in and I've seen some on my socks. I can't find any nests anywhere. They just appear out of nowhere, if it wasn't for the house being clean and my dog being white it would be hard to notice these. Would you know what they are or how to deal with them?

From what I can tell from your photo the bug looks like a no see um bug that bits and the bites really hurt. The can swell up and get water under the skin. Here is a photo of the bug and I think this is the bug in your yard. bugguide.net/.../bgimage

These look like snow fleas which are in the sprigtail family. They don't bite though. Web me has a service where they show bites.

Maybe you can see that site to confirm what you have. Post back with an update!

It looks like a flea.
You will need a white cloth and water.

  • Fleas jump and they don't fly.
  • They do bite.
  • They will bite your dog.
  • Look at where your dog is scratching himself. You may find what looks like brown flecks.
  • This is the flea poop.
  • It is mostly blood so you can dab it with a wet tissue and see that it dissolves into a reddish stain.
  • Fleas will also bite you on your lower legs, ankles and feet.
  • You can test for fleas by putting a white cloth on the ground in the garden or wherever you think they are.
  • The fleas will jump onto the cloth.

  • Capture some of them in a jar, then put the lid on.
  • Examine them to see if they jump.
  • Notice their long legs for jumping.
  • Examine them to see if they look like fleas.
  • Bring the jar to a garden store or a pet store for help with identifying them.

Are the bites round, pink, and raised? Could be fleas
