Identifying a Garden Plant?

Identifying a Garden Plant - fleshy leafed plant cuttingMy friend gave me this. She has them in her flower pots and they look the same. Just leafy, no blooms, height, or anything flashy. But they make good accents along with others. Do you know what this plant is?

Well - sure looks like a Kalanchoe but you say it never blooms and I do not believe that I have ever heard of a Kalanchoe that did not bloom .

  • Perhaps it is not in the right spot or maybe too much water keeps it from blooming?
  • Check out these pictures:

  • If it is a Kalanchoe then here are a couple of care suggestions:
  • Requires little water, indirect bright light, and certain varieties bloom when not over watered or kept in lower light.

These look like my memory of what my ex's mom had...she called them cabbage plants...but they are called Desert Cabbage and are part of the Kalanchoe Species. I never remember them flowering like the Kalanchoe (those flower like crazy). But that was a long time ago and my memory is not as good as it once was.

See if you agree that that is what you have! They are very hardy and require little maintenance! She had them both inside and outside. The outside ones got pretty big (tall and fat). The inside ones were smaller....seemed to grow to fill in their container and then stop. Enjoy them! They are lovely!!

@Cybergrannie, I don't know for sure if they bloom or not. The ones my friend has are all potted inside and outside. They all fill the pots but aren't very tall and look like this one does. I'm thinking the Dessert cabbage too.

Desert cabbage and Paddle Plant are both in the Kalanchoe family but the Kalanchoe has small "scallops" on some or most of the edges of the leaves and yours appears to have that also.

The Desert Cabbage and Paddle Plant usually have very thick leaves and also have a reddish rim on the leaves (some of the time) or that is what I have seen.

Maybe someone else will have a different idea.
