Identifying a Houseplant?

Identifying a Houseplant - small plant with long green leavesMy mom has had this plant for over 50 years and I would like to know the name of it and how to care for it. To the best of my knowledge, it doesn't need a lot of water. She used to have it very full and I am wondering how to get it that way again. I have another one that just seems to been a long stem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, I believe this is a Hoya plant but there are so many different kinds that you may have to go by the blooms to identify the correct name.

  • Basic care:
  • Dark green, large, almond-shaped leaves grow on long vines, which will eventually put out clusters of flowers.
  • Medium to bright indirect light.
  • Less is best when it comes to watering.
  • Does not like direct sun or dark corners.
  • I think it might be the Hoya Carnosa but maybe you can check it out as you did not say anything about what type of blooms your mom's plant had.
  • Here is a link with photos:

  • If this is not the one you have you can wait until it blooms and see if you can find it under one of these names (care is about the same for Hoya's).

This is a variety of hoya. One thing to note is that hoyas send out long stems which initially have no leaves; the leaves grow a little later, but these are the stems from which the flowers arise, so don't cut them off. When the blooms have gone by, there will be a little nub left on the stem; don't remove the nubs because they will be the source of flowers again the following year.
