Identifying a Houseplant?

Identifying a Houseplant - philodendron type plantThere is this beautiful plant in my sister's house behind the sink, one of the stems has grown so long that we have had to drape it over the curtain rod in the window in the kitchen. It has come to my attention that I have no idea what kind of plant this is after all my years seeing it. To help with identification, the entire plant feels waxy, the leaves are extremely thick compared to most. It seems resilient as irregular watering at best and neglect at worst, left him better than most.

I think your plant is a pothos. A pothos is an attractive, popular, low maintenance plant. You can get plant care tips at www.proflowers.com/.../pothos-plant-care

It's NOT Pothos, it's a Hoya also called Wax Plant.

Looks like a Pothos--this link gives an up close of the leaves (and also tells the difference between pothos and philodendron):

Check to see if your leaves and stems match.

Any of these viney plants are great for starting new plants, just root in a little water and when the white roots appear, plop it into a nice pot of dirt. You can decorate your whole house with them!!

Definitely a Pothos and certainly a healthy one. These make excellent house plants and need very little attention - just water when dry feeling and a small dose of fertilizer several times a year. Grows in low/medium light but cannot take direct sun for very long.
I'm near the University of Florida and they love this plant. They have several patented varieties and sell some of these to the public once a year sale.

I still find it difficult sometimes to tell the difference in Pothos and Philodendron when looking at pictures but the one way to tell the difference for sure is that Philodendron has what is called cataphylls. These are the little paper-like things that grow on Philodendrons when new leaves are formed and Pothos do not have these.

Check out the pictures in the link below and you will see what I mean.
Your sister's plant will not have these. You should take some cuttings and start your own.

It looks like Hoya...also called a Wax Plant. It has a slightly woody vining stem, waxy green leaves, and if you're lucky and it gets the right care, it will send out little umbrels of pinkish-white flowers. The flowers also produce little droplets of a waxy substance on them. The flowers that mine gets, stink a bit at night.

To better contain the Hoya, you can take some fairly heavy wire -like a coat hanger- and form it into a circle or loop with two "legs" that you stick down in the pot. Then carefully wind the long stem around and through the wire form. You can also leave it trained up and onto the curtain rod. Actually, any sort of trellis will work to hold up the long vining arms.

Good luck!!!
