Identifying a Houseplant?

Identifying a Houseplant - dracaena looking plant in poor conditionWhat kind of plant is this? It came out of a funeral basket and I put it in this window that gets afternoon sun. The leaves are turning brown and dying a few at a time. Is it too hot for it here?

Thanks.

This is a spider plant. I had one in a southern window and it did well. Maybe you need to water it more.

Does it have roots or a stalk? Can you check the base to see if it is "chunky" (like a fat hunk of stock or if it is a thinner stalk) or roots?

If it has a stock (which it looks like it does) my first thought is this is a Ponytail Palm (a young one).

Here are images of them:

If it does not have a "chunk" base, then my second thought is it is a Dracaena Marginata which has more of the thinner, but still woody type base.

Here is a photo of those:

Because it looks like it has a stock and not roots, I am leaning to it not being a spider plant. Spider plants are rooted plants and have no stalk like center--at least not a woody looking one. Pot bound ones get kind of a greenish/brown thickening, but it is soft.

Post back your thoughts when you compare yours to the photos.

The limbs are pointed downward on mine, the pics don't look like mine. Thanks for your input!

I will keep thinking...my thinking was that the leaves--especially on the dracaena will "droop" like yours when they are not healthy.

Have you tried your local home extension office? If you are in the US, you can put your zip code in and find the closest office:
