I got this at a swap meet. It appears to be metal and has engravings. The lid lifts up and inside was a tiny scoop. Maybe it is some kind of sugar container?

It could be for tobacco
I hadn't thought about that!
I think it is a salt cellar. The bottom is engraved and says it was made in Sheffield, England by Crafton. Now I wonder how old it is!
or a sugar scuttle
It appears to be an item that held something useful (but costly maybe) for individuals or for a small group of diners.
If this is silver or silver plated then some commodities may damage the container if salt or even sugar was stored in it.
