What does the number 1827 14 877 stand for on the back of a piece of wood furniture that I believe to be a night stand? I bought this item at a thrift store 10 years ago.

The number means something to the manufacturer. Try to find more identifying markings to see who made this piece.
My feeling is this was a store brand piece--maybe from Gimbles, or Penneys or Sears or Hills or Zayres or other 1970s big box furniture or department store.
I say that because most of the big brand furniture (the Ethan Allens and such) typically did not staple the back panel to the front panel.
I would venture to guess (I could be wrong because each furniture company was so unique in their numbering systems) that the last numbers are the month and year of origin so August 1977.
It is a lovely piece and looks quite sturdy. Are you asking to try to value it or to buy like pieces?
I really appreciate your comments. I was attempting to value it before selling it to my friend.
