Identifying a Porcelain Doll?

Identifying a Porcelain DollI recently bought this doll for $6 at a small store. She has blue eyes that look to just be glued to her head instead of actually coming from her head. On her sales tag it said "vintage" and she's definitely not new. Her body is stuffed, but fairly hard. There are no identification markings. I can't tell if the hair is rooted. She's about 1 foot tall. Her shoes are painted on.

Without markings, it will be a challenge, but not impossible to figure it out. It's possible someone on this site will recognize her and give you a definitive answer.

To me, she has features (those pursed lips) of dolls by Arranbee, maybe from the 1940s. See the link:

Some were unmarked.

One of my favorite ways to learn about dolls, you can try if you have time, is to use Google images and describe the doll then scroll through pictures. You can even go through old Sears toy catalogs this way! It's fun but time consuming.

Hope this gets you started on the road to learn about her lineage! She is very sweet!

You could take pictures of her and upload them to the blog at www.dollreference.com. Someone there may know.

Dolls can be fascinating but without markings or symbols it is very difficult to identify them. You would have to continually search doll sites that literally have hundreds of dolls and new ones listed everyday. Even with markings it is often difficult to find information on a particular doll.

  • You may be able to post your photos and description on a doll forum site and be lucky enough for someone to recognize something about your doll.
  • There are several doll forum sites but I use this one quite often and usually receive answers within a few days.

  • Your photos are dark so it would be better to lighten them before posting and be sure to give size and describe as much as you can about the doll. They usually like to see the back of the head/neck even if there are no markings.
