This doll is about 20 inches tall with a soft body. I found a faint D on the back of her neck and it looks like there are more letters, but I can't make them out. (I tried to take a photo, but it's too faded to capture.) She is wearing her original outfit, I can tell because her dress matches the hat that is attached to the front of her head.

This looks kind a mass-produced doll. It is worth less than $25
Normally dolls that are made by famous doll manufactures will have a signature on the back of the head or feet of the doll. If the markings are too faded to read these normally dolls heads that doll companies buy in bulk to stock in their stores. There are also a lot of doll kits on the market that use these types of heads and the soft bodies for the dolls bodies.
You do not say why you are trying to identify this doll but if it is to sell then I would venture to say that even asking $15 to $20 would almost be like "pie in the sky" because you would just be listing her as an unknown in a group of several thousand better known brand dolls.
Trying to do research on an unmarked doll is similar to searching for the proverbial 'needle in a haystack' and would only be attempted by someone looking for a special memory doll.
Sorry to be down about this doll but the doll market is the lowest it has ever been and I'm not sure it will rebound even in the next 15 to 20 years.
The biggest market for dolls has always been "girls' and a doll is rarely on any girl's wanted list anymore.
If you wish to try and sell her you could always list her on your local sites like Craigslist, OfferUp, LetGo, Nextdoor, or Facebook groups/marketplace.
Start your price higher and lower it is no one shows any interest.
Good pictures are necessary and have her listed as 'pick up only' as shipping is very expensive and dolls are difficult to pack safely.
With white tissue paper used in gift pkgs, place it on the id mark and with a soft lead pencil, use the side of the lead; not the end point and gently rub across the area. This may help you get the rest of the info needed.
Myrna's suggestion is the best for trying to rub out the numbers so you can read them.
My guess is they will just be 3-4 numbers which you will never find on the internet because she is a kit doll and the mold numbers are so common that you may never be able to match the maker to the doll.
I was zooming all over her and here's why I think she was a kit doll--which means someone took a class at a craft store or in home party. The party came with doll parts, doll bodies and everyone brought their own fabric and trims to dress them,
1. The pattern on her dress does not match in the back--this has all the earmarks of a homemade dress. Unless there is a tag in the dress, I think this is either not her original outfit, or that a mom, aunt, or granny dressed her for a special child (or herself).
2. The rick rack and trim looks very store bought (dime store quality). Most store bought dolls did not use this kind of decorations on the dolls.
3. The hat also looks too big for her head.
Now all of that said, she is lovely and you may actually get more for the outfit than the doll herself since the doll market is in the tank at the moment with a glut of lovelies out there.
If she were mine--I would probably list her for $15 and take best offer (the dress is probably worth 8-10 alone), the doll body not much.
Shipping her is not a good idea for two reasons--she is very fragile and USPS DIM shipping (if you are in the US) is going to make shipping her coast to coast more expensive than her value.
Best if you can to sell her in a local venue.
Post back with how your sale goes!
Thank you for your reply! The only think I have to comment on your response is that the front and back of the dress are connected by the little jacket she is wearing and it is impossible to take off of the doll; there is Velcro down the back but impossible to get off because it is attached to the jacket and too small to get over her head. Her hat is also attached to her head! Im not sure if that makes a difference in your comment or not!
