Identifying a Porcelain or Clay Doll?

Identifying a Porcelain or Clay Doll - doll with red hair and frecklesI just recently purchased this little red head. Does anyone know anything about him? The clothes are hand sewn. He has a stuffed jointed body and is 9 inches tall. He is very unique looking. The head and hands are hand painted and I am not sure what he is made from, some kind of porcelain or clay?

Marked on his back shoulders: Raspbeary 1995. D.A.

This looks like a doll from a kit. He is cute and unique but there is really nothing to tell about him. A person has taken their time to paint and make this doll for someone they cared deeply about. Enjoy the doll and treasure it.

Very unusual but I also believe he was made from a kit.
Doll making from kits was very popular in the 80 - 90's and the 'maker' usually added a name (maybe a child's name or a favorite 'name'), sometimes the date and maybe their initials or name.

Sometimes the kit would just contain the head/shoulders (like yours) and then a body could be selected to fit the head or it could have been a complete kit.

Maybe Pghgirl will have a better idea about this doll and can provide more information as she has several years of working with and researching dolls of all kinds.

That's me! I commented above. I worked in retail for a number of years in the 1980s and 90s and sold many dolls. I renewed my doll collecting/admiring/research hobby several years ago!

I am curious to see if that was you who bought this unique guy on eBay!

She will probably see and respond to this question in the next day or so. PGHgirl is one of our doll and collectible experts and always has good advice. Although Cybergrannie is pretty reliable too. :)

Did you get your neat doll on eBay? There is one example of this doll that just sold.

If this is not yours, then there are 2.

Everything about the doll does point to a kit doll. The paint, the body, the clothing, and hair all look to be assembled and painted by a mom, granny, or auntie who wanted to create a one of a kind creation for a special child or adult. This one appears to be a very loose homage to the Chucky doll if horror movie fame.

It is interesting that a lot of companies used the name "Raspbearies" but it was used to name purple bears, not usually dolls. I wonder if this was the name of the doll studio where it was made.

If you are thinking about flipping him, I would wait until closer to Halloween, and put it out there has an Ooak stands for one of a kind, horror movie inspired doll.

Hi! My guess as a long time reseller is that the person you bought him from called him rare because they could not find anything specific about him so they hyped him as "rare". So many sellers create hype this way which makes sellers like me frustrated. It is kind of misleading. He is one of a kind, because a person made him. Rare should be attributed to thing like coins where there were only a handful released or glassware that was truly a limited edition and few are left in the world because they are so fragile.

What you paid for him is his current market value. Value is what someone will pay. My best suggestion if you want to sell him, is to sell him closer to Halloween as a scary, cute doll. Price him high, tell a story about his haunted past and go for it!

There is a market for these neat-o one of a kind face dolls around that time of year.

Thanks for sharing! I adore unique dolls! Blessings!!

Looks like a project doll. There are no marks, or labels to say so. It looks unique and may be one of a kind!
